In an era dominated by technology and rapid information consumption, the age-old practice of reading remains a beacon of intellectual enrichment. Reading not only opens doors to diverse worlds and perspectives but also offers a unique exercise for the mind. This holds particularly true when delving into the forever rich and heartwarming realms of Italian literature and classics, a treasure trove that has significantly shaped global culture and education, that has undoubtedly shaped countless hearts and minds to this day. In this blog, I wish to talk about the enriching experience and learning opportunities that joining a book club and reading Italian Literature can provide!

The Timeless Influence of Italian Literature 3 giants of the Italian language

Italian literature boasts a rich tapestry woven by luminaries who have left an indelible mark on our glistening little globe of literary landscape. I sure had some troubles picking but ended up choosing two titans from the past and one contemporary author who still stand out for their profound impact.

Dante Alighieri

No discussion about Italian literature can commence without acknowledging the colossal influence of Dante Alighieri. His epic poem, "The Divine Comedy," not only laid the foundation for modern Italian but also contributed immensely to the development of Western literature. Dante's allegorical journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise continues to captivate readers worldwide. But let's be honest, it is the Inferno, his journey through Hell, that still comprises one of the most captivating literary journeys ever written! It is such a marvelous tapestry of folly, passion, lives and sins that portrays a humanity with which any of us can relate and empathize.

Giovanni Boccaccio

One of the greatest Renaissance luminary, Giovanni Boccaccio holds a revered position for his masterpiece "The Decameron." This collection of one hundred tales, set against the backdrop of the Black Death, explores human nature with wit and wisdom. Boccaccio's storytelling prowess has inspired countless authors across centuries and has gifted us with many realistic portraits of one of humanity's hardest times.

Elena Ferrante

In the contemporary literary landscape, Elena Ferrante emerges as a force to be reckoned with. The mysterious author behind the Neapolitan Novels has garnered global acclaim for her exploration of female friendship, identity, and the socio-political landscape of post-war Italy. Ferrante's work bridges the gap between classic and modern storytelling. The televised version of her L'Amica Geniale, "My Brilliant Friend", is in and of itself a wonderful attempt at bringing Elena's delicate and dedicated cure for the woman's heart, soul and growth to the screen. Each episode is a small movie made of countless artistic stills. I have yet to know one person who has not deeply enjoyed one version or the other of her storytelling.

Reading Italian Literature for Mind Exercise: A Cognitive Workout How a book club becomes a gym

Scientific research consistently underscores the cognitive benefits of reading. Engaging with literature, especially in a foreign language, provides a powerful workout for the brain. A study published in the Journal of Neurolinguistics (Kovelman et al., 2015) revealed that bilingualism, including the act of reading in a second language, enhances cognitive flexibility, attention control, and problem-solving skills. Romance languages are categorized as the friendliest to approach for Anglophones. That is you, my friend! Reading has so many advantages, reading in a second language has even more. But reading in Italian adds an unimaginable amount of beauty, ilarity and charm that only this ever-evolving language can offer. When to start? At any moment! Why not, even now.

Reading Italian: The Ideal Language for Brain Health The unique nature of the Italian language

Choosing Italian as a second or third language not only opens the door to a rich cultural heritage but also aligns with scientific evidence on language learning and brain health. A study in Psychological Science (Bak et al., 2014) demonstrated that learning a second language, especially one with distinct grammar and vocabulary like Italian, can delay the onset of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. What better way than to approach the Italian Language with ad-hoc intro classes? And if you think you are already familiarized enough with it, challenge yourself and join a book club, and immerse yourself in the rich world of Italian classic and modern Literature! There is one more perk.. with Italian being a fully phonetical language (it reads as it writes, no trick-words!), it promises a friendly and fully enjoyable experience, void of judgment and filled with the typical joy that sets Italian people apart.
